Movie to Frame: A New Perspective on the Gesamtkunstwerk Film

Films are often intensely discussed—ranging from script and direction to acting, set design, cinematography, and special effects. All these elements distinguish films from one another. But what do they all have in common?

Time as a Crucial Component
It is the chronological sequence of countless individual frames that creates the Gesamtkunstwerk, the complete work of art, that is a film. But what if you could grasp a film in a single glance?

Can a cinephile recognize their favorite scene?

Do they still appreciate the film’s visual elements in this new form?

Can they even identify their favorite film or guess its title?

These are the questions posed by the design experiment “MOVIE TO FRAME.”

The Concept
“MOVIE TO FRAME” displays all the individual frames of a film on a large surface, offering a new perspective on the entire work. The result is an artistic, abstract, and fascinating two-dimensional representation of the respective film.

Naming
The number of frames in each film determines the name of the respective artwork “Movie To Frame.”
